FINANCIAL LITERACY SKILLS FOR CHILDREN ON WORLD SAVINGS DAY 2021

  World Savings Day, also known as World Thrift Day; is usually commemorated on the 31st of October of every year since 1924. It was established during the 1st International Savings Bank Congress (World Society of Savings Banks) in Milano, Italy. The Italian Professor Filippo Ravizza declared this day the “International Saving Day” on the last day of the congress. World Savings Day or World Thrift Day was established to inform people all around the world about the idea of saving their money in a bank rather than keeping it under their mattresses or other archaic methods of keeping money. K&TRC commemorated the day by empowering children with financial literacy skills. Pupils and staff of Anchorites Nursery and Primary School Akure were educated on what saving is all about; which is the act of setting aside and managing money. The participants were encouraged to cultivate the habit of savings no matter how little the amount. Highlights of the event include in-depth explanation on different ways to imbibe the habit of saving which include: 1. Keeping some amount of money with parents regularly. CHILD LABOUR INCREASES POVERTY

Over 420 children in 7 communities in Ondo State have been identified and withdrawn/prevented from cases of child labour through support from the International Labour Organization (ILO) with funding from the Netherlands Government. FLHE IN KADUNA- NO CHILD SHOULD BIRTH A CHILD

At the on-going project implementation on Family Life and HIV Education (FLHE) in Kaduna State, religious and traditional leaders were sensitized against the alarming rate of child marriage in response to recent reports according to the Chief of Staff to Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, which says over 38 per cent of girls in Soba Local Government Area of the state get married before the age of 15 and that the findings was based on the current General Households Survey conducted by the State Bureau of Statistics, and currently being validated by relevant stakeholders. More alarming was the breakdown of the findings per senatorial zones, showing over 32 per cent of girls are married off before age 15 in Kaduna North Senatorial Zone, 15 per cent in Kaduna Central and 17 per cent in Kaduna South. The facilitator, Martin-Mary Falana, CEO of Kids & Teens Resource Centre gave an overview of the program and objectives of the training. NIGERIA AT 61: ORPHANAGE VISIT INITIATIVE (OVI) TO GIVE HOPE AND SUCCOUR TO VULNERABLE CHILDREN

Nigeria at 61; Orphanage Visit Initiative (OVI) to give hope and succour to vulnerable children As part of activities lined up to celebrate the 61st Anniversary of Nigeria independence, a Non Govermental Organisation IBI Foundation in collaboration with Kids & Teens Resource Centre and other NGOs shared food and other essential commodities to Valerie Chapman Home at Imafon, Akure for the 2021 edition of the Orphanage Visit Initiative (OVI). Presenting the items to the Home, the representative of the NGO, Mrs Jumoke Abereowo said it became necessary to celebrate Nigeria’s anniversary yearly with less privileged children and give them a sense of belonging and promote patriotism. She said that the visit which is going on across the country would go a long way to rekindle the hope of the children in Nigeria and influence them to not only be nation builders but to give back to society. Mrs Abereowo explained that the avenue was also a way to contribute to the attainment of the sustainable development goals (Goal 16) which seeks to promote peace and coexistence among the children.
