Ending Violence and Abuse Against Children

The Importance of ending the perpetration of violence and abuse on anyone especially girls and women living with disabilities was once more brought to the fore as Kids & Teens Resource Centre (K&TRC) joined a global TweetChat to deliberate on issues and instances of violence and abuse against girls and women living with disabilities. The TweetChat was conducted using hashtags: #CWIncludeMe2 #VAWG and hosted on @Official_CYC @IncludeMeTOO @KidsAndTeensNG @joyolebu

To facilitate this TweetChat, K&TRC (in conjunction with Miss Tourism Nigeria Eastern Queen 2016 – Miss Chinonye Joy Olebu) was at Akure High School (The Special Education Division) to dialogue and meet with some young girls with disabilities. The young girls were asked various questions concerning their health, rights, experiences and challenges as regards violence and every form of abuse. The general consensus amongst these girls was that in as much as they know they have the fundamental rights to expression and freedom from oppression, there is still a lot that can be done to protect them against those who might want to take advantage of their special conditions.

Structural Violence as a form violence was identified as predominant in the Nigerian experience of girls and young women living with disabilities. This stems from the fact that most institutions and organisations do not have the required facilities to cater for the special needs of the young girls which in turn leads to segregation and unmet expectations by virtue of their special conditions.

Different approaches and solutions were suggested to the various forms of violence and abuse faced by girls and young women living with disabilities. Increment in the levels of awareness, stricter legislations, proper enforcement of existing laws and the setting up of a parliament made up of people living with disabilities and other important stakeholders were all identified as approaches that can contribute toward ending violence and abuse faced by girls and women living with disabilities.

The girls of Akure High School (The Special Education Division) lauded the exemplary steps taken by K&TRC in bringing the world discourse to their doorsteps, making sure that their plights were heard and they don’t get left behind. Queen Chinonye Joy Olebu (of Joy Chinonye Foundation) assured the girls that her foundation will continue to support and encourage them and told them to always remember that they are loved.

IWPG Signs MOU with Kids & Teens Resource Centre -Educational partnership to spread peace in Africa

The International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG) Global Region 1(Regional Director Na Hyeong Jeon) on June 21st, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) online with the Nigerian NGO Kids & Teens Resource Centre (Representative: Martin-Mary Falana) to establish a peace education program. Kids & Teens Resource Centre is an NGO officially registered with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) that promotes and supports the activities of governments and stakeholders for the development of children and youth. The signing ceremony was hosted by Chikodili Deborah Ekweozoh, IWPG Washington D.C. Branch Manager.
