SEXUAL EDUCATION :ADOLESCENT SRH KNOWING SERIES

The major take-home during the Adolescent SRH Knowing Series Session held at Iju, Akure North today, is the need for adolescents to be assertive.

Many Adolescents go into risky behaviours due to peer influence and the inability to assertively say No! Hence the need to equip them with skills that will help them cope with issues in life.

During the session today, our program officers were also able to answer the following questions asked by the Adolescents:

  • When you are being held down with a knife by a stronger power who wants to rape you, what should you
  • What is the essence of boyfriend and girlfriend friend if we cannot kiss
  • Is it bad to have boyfriend at age 13
  • What is love and pregnancy?
  • If you are drugged to the point of arousal, what should you do?

These and many more are questions on the minds of Adolescents and Young People and we must keep providing the platform for them to get scientifically correct information that will help them make healthy life choices.

The following answers were given :

Question 1
When you are being held down with a knife by a stronger power who wants to rape you, what should you?AnswerHow did you get to the point where a stronger power is trying to rape you?

First and foremost, you must always avoid compromising situations like visiting and being alone with the opposite sex.

If you unintentionally find yourself alone with the opposite sex and you are already sensing that you might be raped then make sure you scream for help as loud as you can. Don’t be saying “I will shout o” just shout for help and use any self defence mechanism you know.

Avoid late nights or working alone in lonely paths that could put you in danger

Lastly, if the stronger power happens to be holding you down with a knife, you can still try to use negotiation skills to get yourself out. I am sure the person would have killed if killing was the intention. So if you are being threatened, try negotiation skills

Question 2
What is the essence of boyfriend and girlfriend friend if we cannot kiss? 

The terms boyfriend and girlfriend simply mean platonic friends. It is quiet unfortunate that those terms are now synonymous to romantic partners among adolescents and young people of today.

Kissing, hugging and sex is not for boys and girls, it is meant for two adults who are matured enough to take the responsibility of caring for a child; so any relationship with the opposite sex should be clearly stated and boundaries well defined.
If you are not ready to take the responsibility of the result of having sex (STIs, Pregnancy, etc) then don’t go there because sex was designed by God to be enjoyed in a marriage

Question 3

Is it bad to have boyfriend at age 13?

I will like to answer this question with a question
Is it good to have an unplanned pregnancy at age 13?
Is it good to get distracted from your life goal and purpose at age 13?
Having a boyfriend at age 13 has lots of disadvantages. Those that tried it only ended up with mental health issues, infatuation, unseriousness towards academics, teenage pregnancy, school drop out, unsafe abortion, death, infections, etc

I have not seen any teenager that has a boyfriend and is still able to accomplish great feats in life.

Seeing the facts laid out, it is left for you to choose what you want your life to look like.

Question 4

What is love and pregnancy?

Love is an affection towards something and someone while pregnancy is the fertilisation of the female eggs by the male sperm after an unprotected sex.
Sex, kiss and touching of the sensitive part of the body is not an expression of your love towards the opposite sex. If any one is asking you to have sex with him or her to prove love, run for your life because that person is just trying to satisfy a selfish desire
Sex is never synonymous to love
Love always wants the best for another person and it is not selfish. Love is patient; love waits.

Question 5

If you are drugged to the point of arousal, what should you do?

One of the ways people get raped is when their drink or food is drugged.
As a young girl don’t collect Coca-Cola from brother Sola, it might have been mixed with drugs unknown to you.
Don’t leave your drink unattended to and don’t collect a drink from a stranger even if the drink is still sealed.

If it happens that you are drugged to the point of arousal, keep the consequences of succumbing to that arousal in view and talk to your parents or a trusted adult about it so they can help.
Just one night stand or a casual fling can cause a lifetime of pain and regret.

Watch the kind of friend(s) you move with because things like these do not usually happen by chance.

IWPG Signs MOU with Kids & Teens Resource Centre -Educational partnership to spread peace in Africa

The International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG) Global Region 1(Regional Director Na Hyeong Jeon) on June 21st, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) online with the Nigerian NGO Kids & Teens Resource Centre (Representative: Martin-Mary Falana) to establish a peace education program. Kids & Teens Resource Centre is an NGO officially registered with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) that promotes and supports the activities of governments and stakeholders for the development of children and youth. The signing ceremony was hosted by Chikodili Deborah Ekweozoh, IWPG Washington D.C. Branch Manager. Raising HPV Awareness Through Sports On World Cancer Day, Kids & Teens Resource Centre (K&TRC) partnered with Girl Effect Nigeria to spread a crucial message: HPV vaccination can help prevent cervical cancer! To engage young people, we organized a novelty football match between Muslim High School Ore and Ore Community High School in Ondo State.   Pre-Match HPV Awareness   Before the match, K&TRC CEO Martin-Mary Falana met with Muslim High School’s Principal, Mr. Malam Yusuf.
