WORLD CANCER DAY 2019

Towards a continuous and effective  impact amongst young people, Kids & Teens Resource Centre  (K&TRC)  in partnership with Reviving Girls Initiative and Doyen Foundation commemorated the World Cancer Day (WCD) 2019 with Federal Girls Government College (FGGC), Akure on “Breast Lump and Breast Cancer” under the theme “I am and I will”.

The theme “I am and I will” implies that every individual is the hero of a Cancer – Free Generation. Whoever the person might be, he or she has the power to reduce the impact of cancer for himself or herself. In this regard,  K&TRC used the “catch them young”  strategy to enable the students make quick and informed decisions about whatever pertains to their health early in life.

With 57 persons in attendance, the sensitization program created an awareness on making personal commitments #IAmAndIWill. This will aid the reduction of the 9.6 million people who die every year from cancer.  Mr Oluwadara Toyosi of DOYEN Foundation and Ms. Adebukola Adedoyin of Reviving Girls Initiative gave goodwill messages. Afterwards, Mrs Folashade Afeye; the Programme Manager of K&TRC did justice to enlightening the students about breast lump and breast cancer and how to conduct a self breast examination .

Beautifully enough, the program corrected myths and misinformation the students had in time past. This was revealed by several funny questions  that were asked. Most questions were mostly answered by the Speaker and Mrs Ajidagba (K&TRC Human Resource Manager). The  students were so happy they got clarity to these wrong mentality and urged the organizations to do more of sensitization programs at their school.

The program which kicked off at 3:17p.m. with first stanza of National Anthem, came to a close at 4 : 15 p.m. The second stanza of  the National Anthem was sang and there were  photo shoots with commitment cards.

Our holistic remediation approach focuses on: 1. Education: Providing essential school kits to children, enabling them to attend school regularly and pursue their passions because we believe that children should work on dreams and not in farms. 2. Economic Empowerment: Establishing Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) to empower local economies and improve the livelihoods of farmers and parents.
