The first confirmed case of Coronavirus (COVID-19) was reported in Nigeria on 27th of February 2019, ever since there has been an increase in the number of confirmed cases. The presence of the pandemic in Nigeria has crippled the activities of key sectors in the country and among this is the educational sector.
The increase in the confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Nigeria has led to the implementation of different measures by state’s governments to reduce the spread of the virus. Some of these measures include the lock-down of schools, markets, worship centres, sports centres etc. Citizens are encouraged to wash their hands regularly with soap and water or use alcohol based sanitizers, stay at home and self isolate if they have symptoms of fever, cough and difficulty in breathing.
Before now, students in both primary and secondary schools were preparing for their exams and those in the tertiary institutions had just resumed their new semester. The Stay at Home directive from the government has led to a halt on the education of these students as they are at home all day and far from their places of learning.
To solve the problem of accessibility to learning, most state’s governments have created avenues using Television programs and E-learning portals to educate Students. Here in Ondo State, the Governor, His Excellency Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu has made it possible for students to be educated while at home. The Ondo State Ministry of Education has remodelled its E-learning portal, www.odsgmoe.com to meet the needs of students in the state.
Highlights of the E-Learning Module now includes the following; Past questions that cover junior and senior school curriculums, Computer-based test, E-textbooks and Lesson notes.
The measures put in place by governments to engage students in learning despite the pandemic is highly commendable. Parents should complement government’s effort by ensuring that their children and wards visit these learning platforms when they are scheduled.
