How our communities are developed depends on the efforts of every individual, it takes a holistic approach grounded in principles of Empowerment, Human Rights, Inclusion, and Social Justice. It is therefore expedient that empowerment scheme ought to be introduced with zero lenience to corruption and its vices.
Communities that are left unattended to will have a negative effect in the growth of the economy, leading to poor performance in the educational sector, violation of human rights and social vices. It is good to know that 70%-80% of 180 million Nigerians are made of the youths; of this figure, 80% are unemployed leading to poverty, springing up of drug peddlers and armed robbers who are mostly youths.
Bad Community development has in one way led to the violation of human rights which include unlawful killing, torture and ill-treatment. The justice system is under-resourced and riddled with delays. Violence against women is pervasive, including domestic violence, Rape and other forms of sexual violence by state officials and private individuals and the authorities has consistently failed to exercise due diligence in preventing and addressing sexual violence.
Children are routinely detained with adults in police and prison cells, approximately 600 children are held in facilities designed for 200. Government provision for homeless and vulnerable children is inadequate with over 1 million street children across the country. 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 10 boys in Nigeria had experienced sexual violence before the age of 18. More than 2,200 cases of rape and indecent assault was reported in 2017, 4-7 cases per day and 70% of them are related to rape.
If the communities are not well developed there will be increase in social vices and unrest in the entire country.
