Introduction
In a bid to get the buy-in of stakeholders on the Solidarity, Accountability and Commitment to End Violence Against Women and Girls – SAC-VAWG project, K&TRC visited the Honourable Commissioner, Ondo Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development Princesses Osadahun to advocate for support to end violence against women and girls in the State.
The Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre supported this project with funding from FORD Foundation.
The commissioner was briefed on the progress made so far in the fight to end violence against women and girls and K&TRC advocated for her office to buy into the project to ensure sustainability of the gains made thus far.
K&TRC also presented Simplified copies of the Violence against Person Prohibition Law (VAPP) to her office.
Highlights
K&TRC appreciated the honourable commissioner for her good works and passion for women and girls. In response, the Honourable commissioner commended the team for their affection towards women and girls. Employing them to continue with the good works. Furthermore, she commended the effectiveness of the End-VAWG Community Response Team (CRT) in the communities of implementation. She stated that her office was looking out for viable NGOs in the state to work along with the Ministry. Also, the Ministry for Women Affairs will need more collaboration with all NGOs whose main purpose is to impact lives and get to meet the needs of the target population in the state. To achieve the goal, she requested for the names of the Community Response Teams. She also asked how often the organization gets reports from the CRT. In addition, how to get access to more copies of the simplified VAPP Laws.
Conclusion
The visit to the Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development was successful; the Commissioner agreed to encourage, support and promote K&TRC in the fight to end violence against women and girls. The Honourable Commissioner reassured K&TRC of her commitment and availability for follow up and prosecution of offenders.
