World Savings Day, also known as World Thrift Day; is usually commemorated on the 31st of October of every year since 1924.
It was established during the 1st International Savings Bank Congress (World Society of Savings Banks) in Milano, Italy. The Italian Professor Filippo Ravizza declared this day the “International Saving Day” on the last day of the congress.
World Savings Day or World Thrift Day was established to inform people all around the world about the idea of saving their money in a bank rather than keeping it under their mattresses or other archaic methods of keeping money.
K&TRC commemorated the day by empowering children with financial literacy skills. Pupils and staff of Anchorites Nursery and Primary School Akure were educated on what saving is all about; which is the act of setting aside and managing money.
The participants were encouraged to cultivate the habit of savings no matter how little the amount.
Highlights of the event include in-depth explanation on different ways to imbibe the habit of saving which include:
1. Keeping some amount of money with parents regularly. Savings can only be done with a trusted person or in a bank.
2. Savings can be done using kolo/piggy bank: saving with piggy bank brings discipline.”
The participants were also educated on how the World Savings Day is linked to the Sustainable Development Goals especially Goal 1 which is ”No Poverty”. If we all imbibe the habit of savings then we will always have some funds set aside on the rainy days.
The program came to an end with a charge to the participants to go home and speak to at least 5 people on how to cultivate a savings culture and make it a part of life.
Children learn best while enjoying themselves; it was a fun time as they also learnt how to do a mosquito clap and a banana dance.
