Education is a process of learning and inculcating new and improved societal ideals. There is the formal education and informal. The formal education is mandatory in the early childhood years between the ages of 6 and 15 years in Nigeria particularly from grades 1 to 9 which is the Primary education that has the duration of 6 years and the junior education which has the duration of 3 years.
It is important in our present day to know that there have been changes in the educational policy. Now, the minimum mandatory education is the primary and the secondary (junior & senior) education in the duration of 12 years, which can now be obtained in both private and public educational sectors.
In 2018, 7.2 million children in Nigeria were enrolled in early education institutions; there were 81.3 thousand public classrooms for pre-primary education, whereas the classrooms required were 146.5 thousand, which means that there was a short fall of 62.5 thousand classrooms in Nigeria.
Due to socioeconomic factors, there are 8.2% of children who only worked and not enrolled in school in Nigeria, this population (31% of child workers in Nigeria) has brought about Child Labour. Many schools are with dilapidated structures that are not conducive for learning because of its associated risks, many schools in the rural communities do not have access to quality teachers and where teachers are available, the complain of the poor access roads to some communities and often do not go to the schools.
Kids & Teens Resource Centre has been able to key into this problem to create a solution to the educational system in Nigeria, focusing on the children in rural communities who don’t have access to the first basic education due to unavailability of schools, inaccessibility of schools available due to distance and bad roads, leaving the children with no option than to be involved in child Labor.
From 2002-2021 K&TRC has been able to build schools in 19 rural communities, provided educational supports to the community children through the Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) program both in rural and urban communities, empowering parents to be able to sustain their children’s education, which has increased the rate of school enrolment in both primary and secondary schools among community dwellers.
K&TRC has also partnered with several organization and MDAs to tackle the level of school drop outs, helping them return back to school to access the basic education and more.
